| Sleepless Night | |||
The Bass Museum of Art will once again be the center of activity with "Night Shift," a group of exiting and unexpected site-specific installations and sculptures in Collins Park curated by Jerome Sans. Sans was the founder and co-director of the world-acclaimed Palais de Tokyo, the cutting-edge contemporary art center that opened in Paris in 2002. Currently he is Director of one of the first nonprofit art centers in Beijing, the Ullens Center of Contemporary Art, and is Cultural Curator for Le Meridien Group. He was co-curator of the Paris Nuit Blanche in 2006, and is also a rock musician and DJ - he’ll be providing the live soundtrack for "Night Shift." Participating South Florida artists include Jim Drain and Brooke O-Harra, Christy Gast, Julie Kahn, Nicolas Lobo, Ernesto Oroza & Gean Moreno, Tom Scicluna, and Frances Trombly. A very unique collaborative piece "Viking Funeral" will also be featured, that is a monolithic 30’ Nirvana "t-shirt" that can be explored from the inside out! There will be special Sleepless Night attractions inside the Bass Museum as well. The Miami International Piano Festival has earned a wonderful reputation for bringing the "best of the best" newly discovered pianists and prodigies to Miami Beach. Come enjoy a tasty sampling of talented Festival musicians for a Sleepless Night of classical virtuosity at the Bass Museum. Thirty minute programs offered at 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. Free and open to the community MIAMI INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL PROGRAM

| Concert: RUSSIAN PASSION |
A tribute to Russia’s long history of classical music innovation, this program will transport the audience from the early romantic era at the beginning of the 19th century (Glinka, Balakirev), through the late Romantic era (Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff) to the great modernists of the early 20th century (Scriabin, Stravinsky, Prokofiev). Russia’s proud tradition produced one of the most prominent composers in the world, Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky, one of the greatest pianists in history, Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff, one of the most innovative and most controversial of composers, Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin, the most influential composer of 20th century music, Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky, and one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev. Back by popular demand, Russian-born pianist Damira Feldman will captivate the audience with a lively and insightful performance of works by the great Russian composers. Free with museum admission |

| Lecture: Border Crossings: Russian Art in the Twenty-First Century |
For decades, Soviet artists had to contend with an official art policy known as Socialist Realism that forced those who wished to pursue experimental art practices to work underground. In the decade leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the international press focused attention on Soviet artists such as Ilya Kabakov and Komar & Melamid who were working in a mode that was related to Conceptual and Pop art yet firmly rooted in their own context. Today Russian artists continue to produce work that is both globally legible and nationally encoded. In this talk, Valerie Hillings will examine the impact of Russian history and art history on the two generations of artists included in Russian Dreams. Valerie L. Hillings, Assistant Curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, earned her B.A. in art history from Duke University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in art history from Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. She has published and publicly lectured on various topics in postwar and Russian art in the United States, Europe, and Australia. |
