ˇAzúcar! FAMILY FESTIVAL

at the

Bass Museum of Art

Saturday, June 30, 2007

Miami Beach - (Monday July 2, 2007) – Approximately one thousand people attended the ˇAzúcar! FAMILY FESTIVAL on Saturday June 30, 2007 from 12:00 - 4:00PM. Free admission included a fun-filled day of educational and unique art projects including wig making, jewelry and costume design, and creating percussion instruments. Kids enjoyed conga dancing and drumming workshops where they could use their own hand-made instruments. Dancer Elena Garcia and musician Jimmy Daniel conducted sessions in which the participants learned the basics of the conga dance.

Other activities included an exciting scavenger hunt with prizes for all of the children, and creating digi-scan portraits, where kids created their own unique highly stylized photographs using a digital scanner. By incorporating the costumes, wigs, instruments and jewelry that they designed in the other workshops, the kids created unique souvenirs to take home. In addition, there were three exciting performances by the dazzling dance duo Lourdes Peters and Jose Pizarro of ONYX. Live music was played by the band ORIENTE all afternoon in Collins Park. A selection of tasty food and ice cold beverages were offered to the special guests throughout the day.

This program was made possible by the generous support of the Smithsonian Latino Center.

ˇAzúcar! The Life and Music of Celia Cruz has been organized by the National Museum of American History and has been made possible by National Sponsor Morgan Stanley with additional support from the Smithsonian Latino Center.

Local support provided by Telemundo 51, NBC6 and MICCOSUKEE RESORT & GAMING.
