VICTORIA GITMAN: ON DISPLAY
JULY 12 - JANUARY 22, 2006
MIAMI BEACH
- (July 12, 2005) – The Bass Museum of Art is pleased to present new works
by Argentine artist Victoria Gitman. This exhibition is comprised of small-scale
graphite works on paper and oil on panel paintings.
In this series
of works, Gitman mimics the delicate filigree of feminine ornaments such
as vintage jewelry and beaded purses with a technique associated with
historic miniatures. The objects are presented on a flat plane that emphasize
the minute detail and labor intensive artistic process.
The delicate graphite drawings are miniature copies of Renaissance profile portraits of women by artists such as Antonio del Pollaiuolo, Botticelli and Ghirlandaio. The intimate drawings capture every minute detail of the costumes and elaborate ornaments that decorate the sitters. Gitman's works communicate a multi-dimensional essay on beauty, femininity, and the logic of display that defines them.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1972, Gitman earned her B.F.A. in Painting and a B.A. in Humanities from Florida International University in 1996. She has lived and worked in Miami for fifteen years.
