MIAMI BEACH, FL - (August 29, 2005) - Travel through Retratos: 2,000 Years of Latin American Portraits, a blockbuster exhibition comprised of over 100 works from 15 countries in Latin America. Free admission includes a fun-filled day of educational and unique art projects, live Latin music and complimentary refreshments. Family Guides will be available for parents and children to explore the exhibition together, answering questions to learn more about particular portraits through "Learning to Look" exercises and historical and cultural background information. Free tours in English and Spanish will be available. In addition, people of all ages will be able to create self-portraits in using period costumes, hats, and accessories inspired by works in the exhibition. An exhibition of portraits previously created by Miami-Dade County youth as part of the Portraits in Motion program will be featured steps away at the Miami Beach Public Library. Also on view will be portraits by the third and fourth grade classes of Sunset Park Elementary School. This program is made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund in conjunction with its support for the nationally touring exhibition Retratos: 2,000 Years of Latin American Portraits. Children and teens will also create HeadScans - portraits without cameras using a scanner as an all-in-one canvas, photo studio, and darkroom. Participants will Photoshop their own images to create unique portraits that they can take home as a souvenir. Video Carta will provide the opportunity for families to create video letters and communicate with their relatives in Latin America. Individuals will receive easy hands-on demonstrations on how to use a digital video camera, edit their video letters, and email them to relatives.
